This is a fairly thin, down to earth, easy to read the paperback textbook. It has an excellent glossary in the back, and I recommend reading it first, because it makes the rest of the book seem very easy, especially if you have some background in either corrections, forensics, or psychology. There's a companion online site at Sage Publishing for students that is quite well done as well. It's free to access. Students might find it particularly helpful if they are assigned papers, as there are a lot of journal articles on that site. The book emphasizes community partnering for successful transitioning back to the community. It's also got a very solid section on diversity, race, and ethnicity. It also discusses probation and corrections in other societies. It's well organized, and I find the book very easy to read; it doesn't seem overly academic, but practical. There aren't very many pictures, but there are nice insets of condensed information in table form.
