Description

AN APPROACH TO COMPING: THE ESSENTIALS by NY pianist Jeb Patton is the most comprehensive book ever publishing on how to accompany jazz soloists with supportive, propulsive 'comping.' Written by the long-time pianist for The Heath Brothers, An Approach to Comping starts with basic comping patterns and then uses transcriptions of the masters Horace Silver, Barry Harris, Bud Powell, etc. to dig deeply into how jazz pianists make the rhythm section cook. Endorsed by Benny Green, Renee Rosnes, Monty Alexander, etc., 272 pages, audio of the author's live group demonstrating the exercises available for free download at shermusic.com.

Author Jeb Patton starts by saying "This is the book I searched for when i first started playing jazz". I decided to take comping seriously and I am so glad such a book exists. The book contents are:Chapter 1 covers rhythms, grooves bass lines and bluesChapter 2 covers shell voicing, guide tones, re-harms of a 12 bar bluesChapter 3 closed position chords, trombone voicing, ii-V-I and rhythm changesChapter 4 bebop, horizontal and vertical motionChapter 5 covers spread voicing, rootless voicings and solo arrangements for standardsIt also comes with 2 cds with examples and backing tracks. The backing tracks are part of the practice exercises. Once a section is completed the author suggests to try out the exercises while playing on a backing. First listen to the professional comping and then try to make your own.Overall the book encourages to play and practice - internalising progressions and comping style and rhythms. It's not just a bunch of cold exercises, it's more like a manual that start slowly and take you all the way.Explanations and material are all 5 stars. I'm looking forward for the next volume to be released.
